The majority of train stations in cities within the UK will have ticket barriers at the entrance and exit to the platforms (although this does vary across the rest of the country). You will need either a digital ticket QR code to scan or a physical ticket to get through. There is usally a glass screen at each barrier to scan your ticket or a small slot to insert your physical ticket. It will pop out at a different slot on top of the barrier so remember to collect it again!
There are a variety of train providers across the UK. Tickets can be bought via their own website or for simplicity can be done through ticketing apps such as Trainline or as ticket machines located throughout the station.
Many stations have information kiosks which will be manned by staff who can help you purchase the correct ticket.
