Train tickets can either be purchased at stations through ticket machines or information kiosks or can be purchased through apps such as Trainline.
If the ticket is for a specific train, time and seat then you do not need to validate it. However, if your ticket is open ended (usually more local trains) then you will need to validate it before boarding your train by inserting it into stamping machines. If the ticket is bought digitally (through Trainline for example) and is open ended, the app will usually give you the option to validate it.
